Fedora 25 Wifi Issues

Hey everyone,

I have an extra computer sitting around and just installed Amahi on it for fun, as I am somewhat inexperienced with fedora. I am currently hooked up to ethernet but need to move over to wifi. wlan0 is not showing up while running iwconfig, although it does when running lspci. My nic is an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200. So, I am lost and dont know how to fix this(possibly driver install)? Can anyone help or walk me through some steps of what to do? Thank you in advance! :)

:) Hello greetings to all.

-)Someone has been able to verify that QT5 applications work in "Fedora 26 i386, with NVIDIA 375.66 or better"?

 Maybe this is an isolated problem.

F27w install to nvme drive; drive not found

I'm installing Fedora 27 Workstation (KDE spin) to a NVMe drive in a Dell 7720 laptop.
The NVMe drive, with Windows 10 installed is not recognized.

A search returns ideas on creating partitions manually, but I'd like to dual boot the windows install.

I'm a Mint KDE refugee, I've installed every flavor of KDE I could find in the last few weeks on a different machine, and have happily chosen Fedora KDE, so I'm posting here for ideas on best practices to deal with this issue.

I sorta thinkin to just add a ssd to the laptop, install Fedora to the ssd then doing a partition copy to NVMe and booting with SuperGrub2 on a usb key, but that solution seems to lack grace.

Thanks,

Jim

The F25 > F27 upgrade worked, but it was very slow booting.

F Questions
Why is The Firewall NOT installed in F25 & F27 FDS? I skipped F26 so I don't know about that.

Why was the Show Applications Buttons Removed in F27? This is bad as Apple taking things away...

Why was TopBAR GNOME 3 Extension removed from software list? It was there for the F25/27 Upgrade, but not the fresh F27.
It was great for putting App Icons on the top menu bar, otherwise it's hassle to switch apps...

Why I'm at it, why can't drag the App Icons in my work-flow order? I could do this on W7.

F26 cannot boot with kernel 4.14.6

Hi

I just updated my F26 installation (112 packages). During the installation, my custom mouse speed settings (configured at boot) disappeared. Thinking it was something to do with the update, I just restarted the system. Then I found I could not boot into the newest kernel displayed in the boot loader (4.14.6-200.fc26.x86_64). However I can successfully boot with a previous kernel (4.13.16-202.fc26.x86_64).

With the 4.14 kernel, it stops and hangs after displaying
Code:

kvm: disabled by bios
I am wondering if it is related to the nVidia drivers - but I am unsure how to troubleshoot further.

Code:

Avoid gparted for initializing and formatting a new Disk

I bought three new "one terrabyte" drives (Seagate Barracuda). The price was right.
I took one of the cpu's sata ports, installed the drives and created the gpt partition scheme, with
4 partitions of 200g and 1 partition with the remaining 135+ gigs.

On reboot, each drive was reporting dma errors, seek errors and all kinds of messages.
This happened with three drives. I thought at first that I had a bad batch.
Smartctl -a for the drive indicated an initial drive failure at around 0 days 2.0 hours) after testing for 2 hours.

After dwelling on the problem, I realized I would have to return three drives, but before doing that, I tried a different tactic.

a) I removed one of my external USB backup drives from it's case, put the first drive in its place plugged it in and waited until
Fedora was quiesced.
b) ran a sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdf bs=1M count=100 (my external drive mounted as /devsdf) This cleared out the front control area of the drive.
c) ran gparted again (using the usb interface to the drive to create a gpt table. Success!
d) Created my partitions as mentioned. Success

I repeated the process for the other drives.

My conclusion. New drives may not be clean, they should be first zeroed out via dd and then setup using either parted or gparted.

Otherwise it seems to be OK for me.

Issue with virt-manager in Fedora 27

$

I have an odd issue with virt-manager in Fedora 27. I have two workstations running fedora 27 workstation. The KVM HOST is running a very minimal non/gui fedora. it was a minimal install with nothing additional except the virtualization group and its dependencies. I have KVM/Qemu set up on it and have a centos 7 VM configured and running. The other workstation is my work workstation. It has a full desktop load of Fedora 27 along with full GUI and all the daily stuff I use. I am using virt-manager to conenct remotely to the other machine to manage this centos VM. I can start, stop, see the status ,etc of the VM just fine in virt-manager connecting via ssh. I can ssh into the VM just fine. And all the stuff in the VM is working as expected. If I chose the "console" view in virt-manager though, I get nothing. just blank. And I keep getting prompted repeatedly for SSH authentication. over and over and over. even though I am using the right credentials. I tried looking in the journal and other places to find some kind of log file that can help me debug this. Do I need anything installed on the VM for the console to work? some kind of driver or something? (The VM is a minimal centos7 with no gui as well) Some setting I can check? Do I need to laod the gui on the host or the VM box? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Flatpak vs Xapps on Fedora 27 Spin.

Hi there,

I am using Fedora 27 Cinnamon Spin. I also knows for the fact that Fedora uses Flatpak, heavily, lately. However, I heard Cinnamon uses XApps. My questions to you are below.

1. I have been using RPM Fusion for both Free and NonFree, to install many things, especially Playonlinux and VLC, since Fedora 18. How many of you starts to use something like FlatHub already? I heard it only been launched for one year, so what is your opinion? Is it a better maintainer?

https://www.flathub.org/apps.html

2. Would the software perform better using RPM Fusion, FlatHub, or XApps? Who are the better maintainers than the others?

3. How do I use "XApps store" in Fedora 27 Cinnamon Spin?

Thank you so much.

F26 SSH is Refusing RSA Key Authentication

$

I'm having a problem where the F26 SSH daemon is refusing to recognize scripted SSH logons using RSA Key Authentication.

I have a NAS that accesses my local machines on my private LAN to provide automated backups. The backup machine is a FreeNAS 9.10 system using scripted RSYNC to perform cron backups. This method has worked for years but is broken with F26. The system continues to work on every PC in my house, EXCEPT the one that has F26 installed on it. For reasons that are not clear, the SSH Keyword Authentication is denied and the user is forced to use password authentication. As you can imagine, this breaks the automated cron scripts.

The problem seems to be unique to the SSH daemon on the F26 box. The F26 box has no problem performing scripted SSH rsync tasks on the other boxes in the LAN; in other words scripted logons from the F26 box to other destinations work fine. The problem is that scripted logins to the F26 box from other boxes fail. This would seem to be an SSHD configuration problem on the F26 box but I can't figure it out.

According to the F26 docs, the ssh daemon is supposed to use RSA by default, and my RSA keys are present in the right files with the right permissions. On my F26 box sshd is refusing to accept an RSA key from the other boxes, and demands non-RSA keys. Here's what it looks like from the other box, trying to do an ssh log-on via the command prompt, as root:

It would appear that then the id_rsa key is passed to the F26 box it gets ignored, and the logon fails because the box cannot supply id_dsa, id_ecdsa or id_ed25519 keys when the F26 daemon demands them.

What's odd about this is that F26 appears to be rejecting valid id_rsa keys even though the keys are in the proper files and the files have proper permissions on them.

Ideas?

Lightdm lost ability to CTRL-ALT-Fn (FC27)

Hello guys,

I am just commenting that I had to switch to LXDM, out of Lightdm , reason being:
when my comp boots, it comes to a login prompt, well if I decide to login there, my session will be "empty" and the reason is that I usually mount /home via truecrypt (or cryptsetup) AFTER the machine boots. This is a very effective security measure.

All was working fine until this morning when I decided to yum upgrade, and I found out after the reboot, that LIGHTDM did not allow me to CTRL-ALT-Fn out of the login screen into a console (where I usually log in as root and mount the necessarily encrypted stuff for /home to work)

So, I have decided to switch to LXDM, which still works as expected.

F27 Server WordPress

Trying to install Wordpress on F27 server. Everything went well until I tried to access through the browser. Then I received an error that the php-mysql extension is needed. There doesn't seem to be any package available for F27. Is this an oversight or did I miss something. I found that the REMI repository is supposed to hold it, so I installed this repo, with no little difficulty I might add. But still couldn't find php-mysql. Thanks.

Cannot extend lv_home after resizing pv

I cloned my 1Tb hard drive to a new 2TB SSHD. Then I used gdisk to relocate the data to the end of the drive. Following this I used Partition Manager to resize the lvm2 pv on /dev/sda3 to 1.82Tb. Partition Manager reports that 50% of the partition /dev/sda3 is used and 50% available.
The volume group is /dev/hanji1 is 931GiB and I cannot extend it to use the remainder 931Gib of the partition. Likewise I cannot extend /dev/hanji1/lv_home.
So what have I missed and how to proceed?

Temporary Concatenation of files

In other systems (eg IBM), one can catenate two or more files to serve as a single input.
In a way, with the linux command cat, we can join file1, file2, file..n and create an input to a Target_Program
Use of cat requires the build of a temporary before it gets to Target_Program. What to do if each fille was one or two terrabytes in size? what then?

It would be great if one could have a standard way to indicate to any "Target_Program" a new input option that takes a dynamic list of files, similar to the list found in a Path statement. There are many advantages, for such an improvement or enhancement.
One example would be to read catenation of 30 days of log files. Another would be a list of sales by city or sales between two dates.

My view is that Linux is useful for much larger systems if the above catenation could be addressed. Gnome uses an approach as follows:
x=["file1","file2","file3",... ]. This approach is quite similar to presenting to the Path format: "file1:file2:file3:..".

I have given it some thought, and a way to trigger a difference could be to use an environment variable to signal a system library open routine to proceed differently. The program would still open File1, but at end of file1, file 1 would close and file2 would open, without any change to program logic.

Rambling of a IT futurist.
