f27 Seems unstable

Been running F27 for about 2 or 3 weeks now and it seems to be very unstable on my Dell Laptop (Latitude E6510). Here are some examples of what I mean:

1. When it goes to sleep when I close the top, it takes 20 seconds or more to wake back up and let me sign in, and some times it stays black screen and never lets me log in. Does the same thing on another laptop I have as well.
2. When I try to watch movies like youtube or "Catch Magazine" the movie stops for several seconds frequently. This on both Chrome and Firefox.
3. At boot time it sometimes doesn't mount drives in the /etc/fstab file. I have to do a mount -a

Just three of the things I have found that make this release a little "spooky" for me. To the point that I am looking to find the F26 iso to I can roll back to that release. It seemed pretty stable on my hardware. If I can't find it i'll probably go with CentOS for a few months until F27 has a chance to mature.

Ubuntu 17.10 bad problem for some lenovo laptops

From launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1734147

Quote:

Impact: Many users are reporting issues with bios corruption with 17.10. This seems to stem from enabling the intel-spi-* drivers in the kernel, which don't appear to be ready for use on end-user machines.

Fix: Disable this driver.

Test Case: Fix has been verified by our HWE team on affected hardware.

Regression Potential: Minimal, it's unlikely anyone is actually doing anything which requires this driver.
Advice is to hold off installing until fixed. I haven't heard of this problem with fedora but maybe intel-spi drivers are not enabled with fedora kernels?

Hello guys,

OK, so I have this a-bit-old beat-up laptop where I have decided not to use the hard drive (it's already being used by wifey as a kitchen accessory), but boot it always from a USB stick. So, yesterday I decided to yum upgrade it, but apparently it failed. it just got "stuck" after kernel download, I could not even run a "top" on a different LXterminal tab.
I traced it back to maybe the USB stick being not connected properly, so I jiggled it a bit. Eventually after waiting an hour, decided to turn the beast off. This morning I replugged the USB stick into a different slot, and booted it. Everything seems to work exactly as advertised, however:

Code:

uname -a
Linux blackvaio 4.13.13-300.fc27.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Nov 15 15:47:50 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
yum upgrade
Last metadata expiration check: 0:15:59 ago on Thu 21 Dec 2017 10:15:44 AM CET.
Dependencies resolved.
Nothing to do.
Complete!

Yet, my new WONDERFUL PC says:
Code:

uname -a
Linux nova 4.14.6-300.fc27.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Dec 14 15:31:24 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Obviously a newer kernel exists.
I tried running yum clean all (which got rid of 227 downloaded packages). I tried yum update too, to no avail.

Am I missing something ?

cheers

After upgrading Fedora 26 to 27 after a couple of weeks in Nautilus:
Three partitions appeared mounted in the side-bar (I think it is called "Places" ?) /boot / and /home all with the eject button an /home even with the format option!:dis:
I looked into the settings of Nautilus an those of the GnomeTweakTool as well, but can't find anything to get rid of those mounts.

dnf dragora functionality in fc27

I understand that yumex-dnf is no longer being developed and it had become a PITA to use in FC26. But at least it allowed the end-user to see what version of software was installed or was available, as well as providing a decent display of information. Can we not have this with the new dnf dragora product ? How can I see in dnf dragora what version of any software package is available or has been installed ?

Hi All,

I would like to save some video clips from tumblr, however, when I go to view page source, there are no obvious links to files with extensions such as .mp4 .mov etc. So how do I save a video file if at all possible?

Thanks in advance

oh i have just realized potentially this thread is in the forum upgrade section, i couldn't see the normal list of options of where to post, where are they?

How to reset the configuration of preinstalled packages?

I messed a lot with my audio settings which includes pulseaudio, qjackctl, jackd and alsa.
Now I'm at a point where sound doesn't come out of the right speakers anymore and there are multiple pulseaudio devices... It's a mess.
I would like to reset all settings related to the above mentioned packages to default.

At first I thought about uninstalling and then installing them again, but some of these packages come preinstalled and I'm scared of causing even more damage than I already did.

What should I do?

Confirming MTU 9000 Sent\Received

Hello,

How can I test to see if I can send packets from one system to another with the MTU's of 9000 (all the way through)?

I can ping OK via: ping mysrv -c 1 -M do -s 8972

Ideally being able to check if the packet is disassembled (by say a device that only supports 1500) and reassembled (by a device that supports 9000). I want to ensure a jumbo frame in this case is sent and received, all the way through whatever hops it need make, as 9000.

What can you advise?

Missing Boot Record: journalctl --list

F27 on Lenovo x200 DE=Mate

I'm trying to diagnose the lack of Wifi after the last kernel update (4.14.6-300).

History
The current running and working kernel with no errors is (4.14.3-300). A week or so ago I updated to kernel-4.14.5-300 and experienced no Wifi, wifi was not listed in the manager dropdown list, so I uninstalled it to wait for the next update that came out this week (4.14.6-300). I had no Wifi again so I uninstalled it.

Yesterday I decided to look through the boot logs to find the record for the period when booting into (4.14.6) using the command "journalctl --list | tail " to find the most recent boot records. Since I knew the time period I was able to identify the most likely records -3 and -2. Browsing the records "journalctl -b -3" I found this to be the prior boot, it notes the update to grub.cfg to add kernel-4.14.6. The next record "journalctl -b -2" is not for the reboot into the new kernel where I discovered the wifi was not working, but for the reboot after that back into kernel-4.14.3.

So I'm perplexed, searching bugzilla did not turn up any hits for "missing journal records". What search terms should I use? Has anyone experienced not finding journal records?

NVidia module crashes grub2

Hi,

I have basically two issues while the first one might be a bug.
1) I upgraded from FC26 to FC27 a few days ago. Since I had some issues with the NVidia driver I tried to remove the 340 and install the 304 again. This completely destroyed grub2 such that it came into rescue mode. After fixing that I tried again and it was even worse because even grub2 did not work anymore and my computer was only able to use grub. However, with a Live system I was able to recover and I also got rid of the NVidia driver and I am using nouveau now.

2) This is now the second problem because I am not able to activate my second monitor anymore. xrandr only shows one monitor connected. This is actually not a problem neither of the monitor nor the graphics card because using the above mentioned Live system uses both monitors. How can I use my second monitor now or how to get nouveau to even detect it?

Thanks,
Markus

[SOLVED] A question about KDE

What were the devs thinking when they "killed root access"?
How are things in certain files / folder to be changed now, if need be? (By their thinking) Or arn't they?
I saw an article that stated that this can be "undone" but why do it in the FIRST place?

Please, I'm asking to learn... & to know what the DEVS had in mind?
It sounds like a total lock-down to me!

BTW: how do you mark these threads SOLVED now? I'm not seeing the thing to do it.

second screen becomes primary when lid closed

I have a second monitor attached to my laptop, which becomes my primary screen when I close the lid of my laptop. How can I force fedora to keep the second monitor as the secondary screen, despite closing the lid. Does this happen because the primary screen gets turned off by closing the lid? Is there a way to avoid that?

Upgrade To 27/Gnome Failed From 26

Upgrade failed in Gnome Software and on the command line.

From Gnome Software the system would either just reboot into the previous distro or reboot, display text stating that the upgrade would take a long time, then reboot into the previous distro (26).

From the command line I would get some kind of --rsync message and command not understood.

Wrong UUID Assigned by Grubby For Last Two Kernels

I upgraded to F27 at the end of November and had no problems with kernel updates till the latest two kernels (4.14.5-300 and 4.14.6-300). After rebooting I would not have any wifi connectivity and while investigating this I discovered that I had booted with the above mentioned kernels into the root of another system on the same drive.

Graphical log In. how to restore please.

Fedora 27. 64 bit running wayland.

I was playing around with Samba, messed it up and wanted to start again from fresh.
Looked up what others had indicated.

Was running gnome desktop (workstation) from a graphical log in but has a terminal open as root and entered;

dnf remove samba samba-client samba-common.

Part way through the screen just went blank.

Left for a while and then in frustration pushed the reset button. Now I can only log in to a tty text screen.

Anyone got any ideas as to how to restore the graphical log in? (perhaps for both X and Wayland)

Thanks

long lag in time

Fedora 27 upgraded from Fedora 26 64 bit.
Graphical Log in using X. I do not use Wayland because when Libre Office opens it opens the files in a small window and one has top expand them or drag the frames to get a workable area to even see the contents of the file. very annoying and frustrating. Have not found a fix for this as yet. So I use X as teh Libre Office files always open in a workable window and I can see the file contents.

However the main issue is;

Most of the time it takes minutes from the time I "log in" to the time the desktop screen appears.
No errors are reported. I noticed it when running Fedora 26 but did not look into it. I upgraded to Fedora 27 via the "Software" app down load. All went well but I still have this lag issue.

The computer has a SSD for the /boot system files and a standard hard drive for /var/ and /home

Any ideas as to how to reduce the lag time.

Thanks

I don't understand how to fix this problem. I always ge the same error message on dnf remove xxxx

[elnour@Bjorn-Ubuntu ~]$ dnf remove fedora-repos-rawhide yum-utils No such command: remove. Please use /usr/bin/dnf --help It could be a DNF plugin command, try: "dnf install 'dnf-command(remove)'"

Please can someone take a look at this.
