yum-dnf removed in 27/Gnome

There was a package tool, which I believe was called "yum-dnf," that allowed you to search through all the available packages and check a box to select the one you wanted. This was a very convenient tool in 26 and earlier distros. What happened to it? Was it replace by "dnfdragora?" BTW, I can't get dnfdragora or the updater to run in Gnome. Also, when I try to run dnfdragora from the CLI I get:

[root@xxxxxxx xxxxxx]# dnfdragora

Fedora 27 smart USB/token drivers?

Hi. I am new to Fedora and I am trying to get/install drivers for Gemalto IDBridge K50 smart USB/token. From local support company I got .deb package, that was working on Ubuntu 14.04 (previous OS). They do not have .rpm package for Fedora.

I can't find correct package/driver for Ferdora 27 (x64). Gemalto page http://support.gemalto.com/index.php...2#.Wjgs2NiZaQ/ says:
libccid libraryThis USB CCID device is supported by the libccid library. This library provides a PC/SC IFD handler implementation for the USB smart card interface devices compliant to the CCID protocol.Gemalto is actively involved in the development and improvement of this library. This library is packaged and distributed by most of the Linux distributions.

I don't find libccid library for Fedora.
I need help finding correct package to use with IDBridge K50. Please advise.

Thanks.

ThinkPad Ultra Dock + external monitor causes crash

Hi,

I'm using Fedora 27 (4.14.7-300.fc27.x86_64) on Lenovo ThinkPad P51.

When laptop is connected to ThinkPad Ultra Dock with external display, system goes unresponsive and hard boot is required.

If monitor is connected while system is up, crash happens when display settings are opened.

Is there anyone else with same problems?

I have run through a lot of suggestions and the only solution that seems to work is to use Chrome.

Firefox simply will not play some twitter videos (HTML5 - I think).

Installed ffmpeg, installed Flash player, ...

Nothing works and get "This media will not play"

Works on Chrome. Any suggestions appreciated!

Plugging in Galaxy creates audio device?

Hi All,

Saw an interesting bit in Dmesg when I plugged my Cell in to charge ( albeit @ low rate).

[ 5794.990175] usb 2-1: USB disconnect, device number 10
[ 5795.293084] usb 2-1: new high-speed USB device number 11 using ehci-pci

[ 5795.424152] usb 2-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 5795.424156] usb 2-1: Product: SAMSUNG_Android
[ 5795.424160] usb 2-1: Manufacturer: SAMSUNG
[ 5795.424163] usb 2-1: SerialNumber: XXXXXXXX
[ 5795.469988] usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio

As soon as I did that my desktop Audio Service stopped working. Ok. time to explore multimedia devices.

Where are we with Enumerating all audio devices on my Desktop so I can sort them out?

Is that sorting done with Udev or some slice of Systemd?

The myriad mixers and channels and so on deserve to be rationalized.

Thanks!

Oracle VirtualBox installation script

There are many threads here detailing the troubles that Fedora users have installing VirtualBox. It shouldn't be that difficult, and it really isn't.

My personal preference is to use the RPM from Oracle. It has worked extremely well for me for several years now.

Simple Scan does not recognize HP scanner but the printer works fine.
This is on all 3 Fedora 27 installs, it also does not work on Solus.
It does work on Pop OS.
It use to work just fine but now it wants to use the camera as the scanner, it takes a snapshot picture instead.
Does anybody now how to fix this?

Evil lockup and kernel crash this morning

Hello guys,

yesterday I was running 4.14.6-300.fc27.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Dec 14 15:31:24 UTC 2017
and I group installed the "KDE Plasma Workspaces", so I could get my file copy dialog box to show up in konqueror (albeit a different color, typical kde chaos), I noticed during install that a LOT of the qt5 packages were "downgraded". I did not log out nor reboot after that.
....and this morning I wake up to find my machine locked up ! mouse moved, but I wasn't able to click anywhere. Keyboard not responding (not even numlock would light up)

So, I rebooted. Came back fine, and decided to do a dnf upgrade. I noticed that it installed a new kernel: 4.14.7-300.fc27.x86_64
I noticed it took some time to build the Nvidia drivers, eventually it came up fine. I switched to console to mount my home and other drives using truecrypt, and voilla !

Cowabonga ! Sorry the pix are low quality, my phone is really crappy. I then rebooted hard, and proceeded to boot up the old kernel 4.14.6-300 , which I am using now to type this up. I gotta go run some errands, but on the way back I will relaunch the new kernel to see if this happens continuously, and post my findings.

Oh no ! Polkit

$

Yesterday I posted on another thread, that it is really annoying to get these Polkit popups every time I want to do anything more than type a letter, say add a new printer. Or even whenever I launch konqueror to do some file copying, KDE had somehow thought centralizing all your passwords in a "wallet" was a good idea, and provides a popup to "unlock" yout wallet and voilla there comes polkit with its 2 dialog boxes, one below the other, which actually hide themselves behind the KDE stuff (or it's the KDE stuff that says " I wanna be on top")... Anyway, the annoy factor is ASTOUNDING !

So, I have today, after my morning crash party, which has subsided for the time being, decided to go and kill this polkit, pervasive little annoyance.
So the first thing I did is go in as root, and annoy the little annoyance by:
Code:

mv /etc/polkit-1/ /etc/polkit-1.DISABLED
mv etc/xdg/autostart/xfce-polkit.desktop /home/bobx/cr4p/
mv /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd /usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd.DISABLED

Then I rebooted and tailed /var/log/messages, to see all the invaded software that depends on that little annoyance.
Code:

- nova systemd[1]: polkit.service: Unit entered failed state
- nova dbus-daemon[815]: [system] Activating via systemd: service name='org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1' unit='polkit.service' requested by ':1.1' (uid=0 pid=801 comm="/usr/libexec/rtkit-daemon ")
- nova NetworkManager[867]: <error> [1514030791.9217] auth: could not get polkit proxy: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms)
- nova journal[811]: Error initializing polkit authority: Error initializing authority: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms) (g-dbus-error-quark, 20)
- nova systemd-coredump[3199]: Process 3174 (Web Content) of user 1000 dumped core.#012#012Stack trace of thread 3181:#012#0  0x00007f8ff05fa913 _ZN7mozilla3ipc14MessageChannel22OnChannelErrorFromLinkEv (libxul.so)

so then I tried with: systemctl disable polkit.service
rebooted, came back, and same thing. Log into Xfce was literally impossible.

Then I went one step further:
dnf remove polkit, which literally killed Xfce, so I had to switch to LXDE. Ahh that seems to somehow work. Great !

Let's see if all works normal from now on, and I will add whatever I find here that does not work or is somehow tainted.
Interestingly enough FF seems to work without polkit on LXDE, however it wasn't working on Xfce with a crippled polkit.

All this above basically points out , just like there is a user called "boycottsystemd" , that we should not just accept unilateral invasion of our privacy without at least a bit of resistance. IMHO Polkit has invaded too much of the system, to the point of becoming an annoyance, at which point people like me SNAP, and go somewhere else.

Hi are these processes necessary as pc seems slow? Anything dodgy?

Also what is gdm (gnome desktop manager?) or colord? I would have thought only root and login name would be running?

I am trying to prepare a presentation for a talk I am giving next month. So far I have added and saved 5 slides, including 6 PNG images. The talk.odp file size is just over 102MB.
When I add a sixth slide, no matter how simple, it will no longer save:

Write Error. saving the document talk: General Error.
General input/output error.

Saving to a new file fails in just the same way. I can't see anything in the fedora logs. Where can I look to find out what the problem is/how to work round it?

When booting Fedora, whether the latest Fedora 27, or earlier versions, a small number of boot error messages appear on the bootup screen before Fedora goes back to its GUI graphic of filling up an image and then presenting the login screen. The boot error messages do not appear to affect Fedora at all as once I login Fedora is stable and everything works properly. Still I would like to understand the boot error messages which appear and eliminate them if I can. The trouble is that these boot error messages ( there are about 4 or 5 of them ) go by too fast for me to know exactly what they are. I tried the nice Logs application but it hardly seems to be able to tell me which are the error messages I am seeing on boot up. Is there any way of identify these error messages in some sort of boot log so I can pursue trying to eliminate them if possible ?

Upon building an rpm of nzbget, i get:
Code:

RPM build errors:
[  226s]    File not found: /home/abuild/rpmbuild/BUILDROOT/nzbget-19.1-9.1.x86_64/usr/sbin/nzbget

The spc-file looks like:
Code:

%files
%{_bindir}/%{name}
%{_sbindir}/%{name}
%{_datadir}/%{name}
%{_docdir}/%{name}

any ideas?

listing available audio cards and specifying/using them in mplayer ...

Hi,

my system has few sound cards. It's little bit cumbersome to use audiomixer to switch which sound card a program will use. I'd like to have some aliases to start mplayer / vlc / chrome and play 'on' specified device.

Lets start with mplayer, that should be simplest. MPlayer has -ao flag, where I can supply:
-ao alsa:device=...
or
-ao oss://

the snag is, that even after some googling I cannot figure out, what shall I pass there!

Help very much appreciated!

Two listings of soundcards in my system:
