Canon PIXMA MG5320 I/O Error

I had no trouble getting the Canon MG5320 to print using CUPS, installation went smoothly. The scanner is another matter. I've cable connected the printer/scanner using a USB. I have both scangear and the xsane add-on for GIMP installed. I can initiate GIMP from root or with a normal user account and perform File-Create xsane: Device dialog... and I receive after initiating the scan an error message: "Error during read: Error during device I/O". When I look at the info tab on GIMP it correctly identifies the PIXMA MG5300 and device designation 04A91754. dmesg generates a line: "usb 3-1: usbfs: interface 1 claimed by usblp while 'xsane' sets config #1". dmesg indicates that the printer/scanner is being detected properly.

When I use GIMP File-Create-ScanGear MP, I receive a "Cannot find available scanners" error message. Simple Scan generates a "Unable to connect to scanner" error. Skanlite produces an "Opening the selected scanner failed" error on initiation. Fearing a negative interaction between ScanGear and xsane, I uninstalled ScanGear to no avail. Any ideas?
