I have a UML290 which I have been using on Linux for a year, via wvdial, since support from NetworManager for it will not be ready until Spring. Naturally, I get to see the commands in the terminal as they are being sent. Today I saw something different in the terminal. It looked like someone on the other end (it could only be Verizon, or possibly a 3rd party wireless provider was manually typing something. I captured the conversation below: (--> is wvdial). Modem is responding to commands typed remotely by someone. It looks like they are obtaining my IMEI number, probably to verify that I am authorized to use their tower or otherwise trying to fingerprint me (insert paranoid fantasy here).
The result is you can type these commands into a terminal like hyperterm to reveal your (or someone else's device's IMEI number. What can you do with an IMEI number? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intern...pment_Identity In other words, you can report your device's IMEI number if it gets stolen and they can block it thereby reducing supposedly the incentive for theft of such devices. The op may have been checking to make sure I wasn't using a stolen modem, for example, but who knows. According to the article, "A target for lawful interception (wiretapping) can be specified by its IMEI number as well as IMSI and MSISDN." Oh shoot, they're onto me. I knew I shouldn't have liked that post on Facebook. I'd better not have cut off any mattress tags!

I don't know what they do with the IMEI. Probably run freeware NG-Trace on it, lol.
