maximum overlay Live USB ext4

I realize this issue has been discussed before, with some reference to the file system used (ext2,ext3) . . .

so what is the now acceptable guideline for a practical limit to the persistent overlay maximum size
for a Live USB with a Fedora 17 ext4 filesystem ?
