I have a fresh Fedora 18 install from the LXDE version because it is the only one which would fit on a CD. I have changed the default.target to multi-user because I do not want a graphical boot. I am transferring my configuration from an existing F17 desktop.
I have been a linux user for more than a decade and a fedora user for most of that. I put appropriate things into ~/.Xclients, which on fedora is sourced from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. "startx" fails without error -- it loads and initializes it's various extensions, then it "terminates successfully".
"lxdm" will work, so I do not think it is a driver issue, etc, and I have had several linux previous installs on this computer without any issues.
I have removed lxdm in the hopes it was some service associated with that, but no such luck.
Anyone know what's up?

Well, for posterity xinit works even though startx does not; this uses ~/.xinitrc and not the fedora configured ~/.Xclients.
Would still like to understand why...
