I use computers for work and fun since I was 15, 31 years ago. I used a lot of Desktop Environments over a broad range of Operating Systems and hardware platforms.
But today at work I was working on several issues at the same time, scripting in bash, coding c in Code-Blocks, remote maintenance through ssh and rdesktop, accessing files on Windows and Linux environments through samba and sftp. While mailing results I copied and pasted from all those different environments into Outlook 2010 on a Windows 7 Virtualbox, because this is the standard and supported here at my work.
I was in a flow and suddenly I realized in all this years I never ever had a period I used so many different applications and tools without thinking and without getting forced to find solutions for things which I just expect to just work naturally but, at that time, didn't. Like network file transfer, copy and paste all over the place, sharing my home directory with remote desktops and virtual-machines. Task switching in one scroll and click of the mouse.
And now I was doing it, no short comings, it just works. Complete concentration on getting the job done and not spending a great deal of the time on the environment which should support this.
Of course, it also means the tools I use are starting to mature immensely, but for me Gnome 3 (and extensions) connects all this in a awesome way. I feel at home....
Thanks Gnome!!!
