what has changed with USB device handling FC18

Up to FC18, I had eventually found which groups a user had to be in the use an ICD2 7 with piklab,
which were root and microchip
The rules are correct in udev rules, both grpoups have been added and added to the user group memebership.
Also tried adding Microchip, usbuser, usbusers,
I can use the app as root, but not as a user.
unfortunately no piklab log .
running piklab from strace doesn't reveal anything.
All I see is the error messagethere are a lot less log files in /var/log in FC18
This app, piklab, is a QT4 app,
any suggestions where to loop to try and trap the error so I can see what causes it??
