Latest update rendered my desktop unbootable

My desktop runs F 17. After today's update, including a new (PAE) kernel, I rebooted. It hung, with these two messages as the last ones on the screen:

NFSD: Using /var/lib/nfs/v4recovery as the NFSv4 state recovery directory
NFSD: starting 90-second grace period

I tried booting into an old kernel, but both of them failed in exactly the same way, although I was able to use ^ALT-F2 to reach a TTY and log in as root. After a few experiments, I tried this as root:

yum history last undo

It removed the latest kernel, but reported that it was unable to find some of the things that it had upgraded. I rebooted. Not only didn't it help, I now get this:

Bringing up interface eth1: ERROR :[/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth] Devide has different MAC address than expected, ignoring.

And, of course, it's not on-line, which means that I can't even try to reinstall things. BTW, this is all being sent from my laptop, which means that I can copy messages from the desktop's screen into this post.
