Fedora 19 Tests TC3 April 3, 2013
Anaconda and Gnome

Anaconda Testing

1) I chose USA keyboard with the Euro symbol € on the 5 key. There is a error in the title (Extra right parenthesis on the right). Microsoft has already been distributing (in conjunction with laptop manufacturers), to include the Euro on the E key. We should have a choice of permanent keyboard layout to include the euro, and not do the job later, governed by tweaks. I was able to do the installation using the Canadian French keyboard layout.

2) Layout is not PC105. with extra key between the "left shift" and the Z. I use the Canadian(Canadian French) ca(fr). There is no Euro option as there is for the USA keyboard.

3) Where are the locations of the three symbols «, », and ° ? . On my old IBM keyboard layout and my new Logitec keyboard, they are on the key identified at 2).
4) Only show free space after choosing disk seems to be a poor decision. I have 4 disks, all with free space of various amounts. The more ideal and proper location is to show free disk space beneath the icon image and below sda, sdb, sdc, sdd, (my system). I had to go one by one to decide where F19 was to be installed.

5) If I choose more than one disk, all of which have free space, which ones will be mounted at boot time, and which one will get the F19 installation.

6)In my view, software selection should be deferred to post installation, after a reboot. This deferement would save major yum updates immediately after firstboot. Not only that, the function would be more in line with live cd, which uses downloads.

7)During post processing, (after all downloads), there is no screen activity. The screen timed out to cause a solid black output, with no indication that behind the scene processing is taking place. There was no way to restore the screen until it was time for the bootloader prompt to reboot was presented.

8)Under partitioning, with SDA, SDB' ... indicate freespace to nearest gig. Not interested to know it is 1.65 megabytes.

9) Region/Date/time setting is broken. Wanted to select Montreal, instead of New York. I missed the Montreal and ended up with another entry. When I clicked to retry, scrolling did not work any more, I could not see beyond the first 22 rows of city names. Fortunately, I could type Montreal in the input box and that worked.

10)Anaconda wants a user name. Can you have a "user administrator" without a password? The Fedora 18, Russian Spin (from rpmfusion) asks if a) the user wants to be an administrator, and b) if he wants administrator priviledges without a password?

11)If the user does not choose any software entry, what is the DE default that will be installed, and with what minimal programs.

12) Why is anaconda asking for a user name now, instead of doing it at first boot? Is it for sudo? First boot allowed sudo.
Anaconda, except for what I tested seems OK, improved somewhat over F18 version.

General opinion. Anaconda was geared to the developer not thinking of how an end-user would use the system. He should realize that Fedora is an international Linux and not everyone thinks like an American user. For example, you have a triangle provided for output selection. If selection was made, can you not show a checkbox or suggest that the user should visit keyboard or Region/time. or software selection?
13) The user logon session here needs to indicate that this person will be able to access the system via ctlalt-f1 through ctlalt-f6. And during first boot, a different user must be added.
