I upgraded to FC18 recently and have had no end of problems with X. It is crashing consistently when I'm using Firefox. Sometimes when I start FF, other times after a few page loads or a few hours. I have done "yum update" every time new packages need to be installed.
The funny thing is that my VNC session (running simultaneously) hasn't had any problems at all: so the localhost display X will be hung (just freezes, except I can move the mouse around, no keyboard). But if I connect with VNC from another machine I can do everything just fine in the VNC session.
The only way to get back to localhost is to "kill -9 (PID of X)" and then log back in when it returns to the boot screen.
Could this be a memory issue? Something with swap? It's a bit baffling to me that VNC is fine the whole time whereas the local display is totally hung.
I am sure logs and other info will help diagnose but don't know where to start. I'm using FC18, Kernel 3.8.5-201, KDE 4.10.1.
Any help would be great. Save for VNC, the system is essentially unusable.
