F18 single-boot install on new UEFI ASUS laptop - FAQ?

If this is a FAQ or well-known, please point me to the info and I'll read up. I've searched and found lots of 'similar but unlike' information.

I'm not new to Linux nor Fedora, but I am new to UEFI and its issues.

I have a brand new ASUS K55N laptop, AMI UEFI CMOS, Win8 preinstalled, etc. I want to install Fedora 18, blowing away Windows. I don't want to dual boot - F18 only. If I happen to save the Win recovery partition, then fine (why I don't know :)). Whatever.

I downloaded and burned the F18 64-bit ISO to DVD. I can boot to grub from it and get two choices: Fedora 18 or the 'test this media' entry. If I choose Fedora 18, I see either "Secure boot not enabled" (if I've disabled it) or "Binary is verified by the vendor certificate" (if enabled). Then the DVD spins down and nothing happens.

I read in the Fedora docs about creating a UEFI minimal boot USB stick, booting on it and then running the installer normally, if I understand correctly (http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/...oot_Media.html). Trouble is, the assumption is that I have a *nix system available to build the boot stick, which I do not. However, I do have a Windows port of 'dd' on my Win7 box, so tried to use it to pull efidisk.img* from ./images subdirectory and transfer it to the USB stick. I was never able to do it successfully using 'dd', so I finally just copied it to the stick in the normal way.

* Also, there's no 'efidisk.img' in ./images as per F18 docs, but there is 'efiboot.img', which I assume is the correct file.

The laptop sees the USB stick and I can attempt to boot from it, but nothing happens. Is this due to the way efiboot.img was copied to the stick?

Where in my many steps have I gone wrong? Is there a complete doc/tutorial on how to get this done? Once again, I have no desire to dual boot (nor ever use) Win8. Just Fedora.

Thanks.

P.S. - If I don't reply promptly, please understand. My Mom died last night and I'm about to be out of town for a few days. :( Thanks again.
