Desktop - Muting Speakers when using Headphones - Desktop

I've been trying to find the solution for the following vexing problem:

I want to listen to music through headphones connected through a front panel
jack. Accordingly, I want output to speakers to be muted.

I've seen lots of posts about this ... but they seem to focus on the
situation for laptops, where it is basically a hardware problem

But this is desktop (AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ × 2) with
8 GB of memory.

Getting the speakers off while keeping the headphones working is no problem
in RHEL 6.4 and of course it's no problem in Windows 8, but I'm really trying
to live these days in Fedora 18. This little annoying problem is a real stumbling
box.

For what it's worth, I've installed Pulse Audio Volume Control and no setting
or combination of settings, using this tool, seems to work.

Also, if it's not clear, both headphones and speakers are working just fine.
I just want to listen to one or the other.

Thanks for any pointers.
