Plugging in a USB device

Hey everyone, question time again... I'm running Fedora 17 and I'm wondering about how pluggable devices are mounted. I plug in my big 2TB hard drive into my linux box, and it gets mounted in /dev automatically as sdg1, sdg2...etc... that's fine, as I expected... but when I plug a device in such as a phone or a camera, it's not mounted in /dev.. I check my computer's log and it's mounted in /sys/devices/pci000 blah blah blah... why is it, a usb device that is my iphone, gets mounted as a pci device? And why are pci's not mounted in the regular /dev/ directory? Thanks!
