Hello,
I'm using a Sony VAIO with Fedora 18. My graphics driver is AMD Radeo HD7650M 2GB.
Problem:
I'm unable to decrease the brightness level, which is running at its maximum setting.
What all I tried:
1. I first tried to fix the problem by trying these one by one and then in combination.
a. Changing the value in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
b. Adding Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" to Xorg.conf
c. Using `xbacklight -set <value>`
d. Adding 'acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=linux' to grub.conf
Nothing worked. In fact, at one point, even my graphical control (that shows the brightness bars) disappeared, so I had to quickly undo the above and reboot.
2. I then followed the advice given here and installed this AMD Catalyst driver for my 64-bit system. The result was: I could not get Gnome to start up properly: no Gnome login dialog got shown and I had to physically power off the system.
3. I then booted in Text mode and uninstalled the driver, and at least was able to get back to square one: namely, the brightness control not working.
Can somebody please suggest what I can do to fix the problem asap? The screen is so bright that it is hurting my eyes, not to mention battery draining very fast.
Many thanks in advance,
/HS
PS: When I was installing the above AMD Catalyst driver, the installer gave me the option of generating a 'distribution-specific' package of the driver. However, because my distribution, Fedora 18, was not listed in there, I went ahead with the...
"Install Driver 12.104 on X.Org 6.9 or later 64-bit''
... option, even though my Fedora 18 has merely version 1.13.0 or X.org X Server. (Issued the command, `Xorg -version`).
