Is it safe to use Fedora 18 gparted to secure-erase a Seagate 3TB USB external drive?
The sata drive in question is the Seagate 3TB ST3000DM01 barracuda inside the seagate enclosure which is connected to the removable seagate USB->sata dock device.
I've read about locking up USB connected drives with hdparm unless you remove the drive from the enclosure and then plug in the SATA cables directly eliminating the USB dock device.
gparted appears to have the pull down option to select the secure-erase option. If need be, I can stop the currently running windows seatools surface analysis to get the exact wording of the gparted pull down. As I recall, it thinks it's an ATA disk with no mention of the USB connection.
I'd like to wipe the disk before a warranty return. It might take 5 hours vs. 5 days for Dban.
Thanks in advance for any pointers or warnings.
Chris
