Some forums prohibit or discourage leet speak and various other departures from traditional grammar and spelling, but I don't know any that prohibt the use of acronyms that stand for phrases like IMHO, AFAIK, LOL. Is this because such phrases honor the early days of the the internet when people posted on bulletin boards with 1200 baud modems?
To me, it would be more interesting if the abbrevations for phrases also spelled exclamations like KACHOO or DIEFOOL but I can't think of any common phrases that would have such an acronym. If such acronyms could be developed then reading posts would become even more confusing for people not in-the-know. That might increase the satisfaction that insiders have in using the acronyms.
