Times must be tough for some of us

My daughter went out to the driveway yesterday morning to start the grocery getter, ahead of my wife. They both had hair appointments and were in the process of leaving. About 60 seconds after Meagan got outside she called the house from the driveway and told her Mom that her gas cap was "off" (tethered style) and that Dad's was missing. We both went down to the driveway to see what was up. It appears that we were the victims of gasoline siphoning sometime over night. The van's tank was empty, as indicated by the fuel light being lit when the van was started. My tank was about 1/2 full which was where I remember it being so apparently they got nothing from my car. We grumbled and wondered aloud for a few minutes, collectively shrugged our shoulders, and then the girls left for the appointments by way of the nearest gas station.

I called the local police just to enquire if this sort of thing was becoming popular again, but the girl who answered the phone said it wasn't and that they hadn't had any reports of siphoning for several years. She asked if she should send a squad car so I can file a report. I accepted and waited for the car (35 minutes!) filed the report, just on principal, and left for my own appointment.

Are we really that desperate these days that we need to go back to siphoning gas? Are locking gas caps going to be all the rage again as they were in the '70's?

It really doesn't bother me that someone stole gas from one of my cars. I'm over it. After all, all I lost was about $20 in gas and $10 for a new gas cap. Not a real big deal. The real kicker is in the fact that I looked around for my gas cap while waiting for the squad car but never found it. Today the wife and I were doing a little late season yard work. She was working on the lawn when she called my name. I turned to look to see her holding a gas cap in her hand
