early_microcode doesnt work in VirtualBox

$

0
Hello,

This is my 1st post in the forum about problems with F28 and F29 Beta in VirtualBox. Both releases couldn't boot with fresh installed initramfs, so I decided to removed early_microcode cpio by command. Now it can boot normally without early_microcode.

Have anyone experienced problems with early_microcode? Is that because of VirtualBox limitations?

Thank you,

Fedora28 fails to recognize bluetooth devices

Hi, I just bought a new bluetooth dongle to work with some earbuds I also just purchased. However, it doesn't appear that it's fully detected on the latest fedora28, despite the manufacturer describing Linux among the supported platforms. This is what I see in dmesg:

Code:

[64928.891929] Bluetooth: hci0: BCM: chip id 63
[64928.892873] Bluetooth: hci0: BCM: features 0x07
[64928.908930] Bluetooth: hci0: BCM20702A
[64928.909858] Bluetooth: hci0: BCM20702A1 (001.002.014) build 0000
[64928.909934] bluetooth hci0: Direct firmware load for brcm/BCM20702A1-0a5c-21e8.hcd failed with error -2
[64928.909942] Bluetooth: hci0: BCM: Patch brcm/BCM20702A1-0a5c-21e8.hcd not found
[64935.233837] Bluetooth: hci0: last event is not cmd complete (0x0f)

When I go into the Bluetooth config in the Settings, it fails to identify my earbuds. It does detect my laptop and my electric toothbrush, of all things.

This is the bluetooth dongle:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the bluetooth earbuds:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Are there other bluetooth settings from within Linux/fedora I should be using to properly pair the devices?

I hope for better results in the final release.

Upgrade 25 -> 27 failed. Can't mount /boot/efi (vfat unknown file system)

I have tried to upgrade from Fedora 25 to 27. When I reboot I get a message scrolling past saying the upgrade failed to start.

I can get into the emergency shell.
Looking in the error logs, using journalctl, I see that /boot/efi failed to mount. It complains about the partition being of unknown type vfat.

"modprobe vfat" - does not find the module.

Any thoughts on how I can proceed. Typing this from my tablet, which is why I can provide logs.

subnet with vpn?

$

Would appreciate suggestions or recommendations:

Currently have 2 desktops, a collection of tablets and phones, Samsung smart tv(older 2012) with raspberry pi running kodi and a recently purchased roku streaming stick. I subscribe to a vpn service and always use it with the rpi. Kodi has a very good vpn manager add on. I use client software on the desktops and tablets but not always connected.

The roku stick does not support a vpn, so I purchased a new ASUS router that has internal vpn server and client configurations. Using the roku without a vpn of course caused my data usage to jump significantly such that I received a warning notice from my isp after only 1 week. I configured the vpn client in the ASUS but quickly learned that isp mail servers will not allow vpn connections. This is of course a problem as all devices on the lan go through the vpn.

Looking to have the best of both, would it be feasible to use a 2nd router as a subnet with vpn client configuration?
For example: Router 1 would connect to isp, provide dhcp for lan and be primary connection for local devices not needing full time vpn.
Router 2 wan port connected to lan port on Router 1, with fixed address and configured with vpn client. Roku, rpi/kodi and any other devices requiring full time vpn would connect to Router 2. These devices would then connect to Router 2 > Router 1 > vpn_server.

My older router (Netgear wndr4500v2) could be used as Router 1 as it does not have vpn capabiity and new ASUS could be setup as Router 2.

Would this configuration work and be reliable?
Any suggestions for another configuration or solution to achieve desired result.

How do i change partitions in the LVM ?

Hello,

when i installed Fedora some years ago, ive let the installer partition my SSD.
That was default in LVM mode, a disaster :(
Now i used to boot the system from my SSD and mounted my home storage HDD as /home.

On my SSD is now a 50gb for the OS and couple MBs for /boot, the remaining space is empty.
How can i repartition my boot system SSD without dataloss ?

cheers, raw ^^

2nd OS not listed in Grub2 menu after Fedora 29 install

Haven't had this happen in years. Install Fedora 29beta and all well except CentOS 7 is not listed in Grub menu. I thought that
Code:

os-prober
, then
Code:

grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
would fix the issue, but upon reboot CentOS is still not listed.

Running "fdisk -l" :

Code:

Device    Boot    Start      End  Sectors  Size Id Type
/dev/sda1  *        2048 136796159 136794112 65.2G 83 Linux
/dev/sda2      136798206 156327935  19529730  9.3G  5 Extended
/dev/sda3      156327936 293046271 136718336 65.2G 83 Linux
/dev/sda5      136798208 156327935  19529728  9.3G 82 Linux swap / Solaris

...shows Centos 7 at /dev/sda3. Dumb question: should /dev/sda3 be flagged "bootable"?

using gnome boxes

This may sound like a stupid question, but I have just started using gnome-boxes and it's so easy. Here's the question, installed a distro BackBox(Debian based). When it finished it said remove media and press enter. What media??? How does this work? Run BackBox live and it looks good.

Resume From Sleep/Screen Blanking & Logging Out Deliver Black Screen, Force Reboot

Seeing two issues here on F29 Gnome:

1. Logout fails: The screen goes black after initiating logout from Gnome's dropdown menu. It stays black and does not respond to the keyboard. A reboot is needed to get it back.

2. Fails to resume from system sleep or display sleep/blanking: If the machine suspends, of if the screen is allowed to go blank after timing out without the system suspending, the screen will remain black until a reboot. (I've seen this same behavior on Ubuntu and elsewhere using a 4.18 kernel.)

Intel hardware, and Radeon Vega 64. (On the plus side, the fans on the Radeon are, correctly, not spinning at idle.)

HP Pavilion P590-0016no m.2 ssd and other gripes

$

A new HP Pavilion with m.2 pci express 128GB SSD and 2TB sata disk. Windows happily recognizes both devices and boots. Fedora, CentOS and Ubuntu kernels don't see the SSD disk. I guess these from lspci -v have something to do with it:
Code:

16:04.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] 300 Series Chipset PCIe Port (rev ff) (prog-if ff)
 !!! Unknown header type 7f
        Kernel driver in use: pcieport

and
Code:

1b:00.0 Non-Volatile memory controller: Sandisk Corp Device 5003 (rev ff) (prog-if ff)
        !!! Unknown header type 7f
Kernel modules: nvme

Then there is:
Code:

+0,009134] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Failure creating [\_SB.SMIC], AE_ALREADY_EXISTS (20180531/dswload2-316)
[  +0,000008] ACPI Error: AE_ALREADY_EXISTS, During name lookup/catalog (20180531/psobject-221)
[  +0,000005] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Failure creating [\_SB.SMIB], AE_ALREADY_EXISTS (20180531/dsfield-594)

Any ideas how to make the ssd accessible and even yet better the boot disk for Fedora?

The other gripe is somehow related to the power management. There has been two complete freezes of the display after a period of prolonged no use of the workstation. First one was during dinner break and the primary display on HDMI was completely black with mouse cursor displaying and unresponsive the secondary display was on power save. I don't know if the system was completely dead as I had not enabled ssh daemon. On the second time this happened during lunch and this time both monitors were on power save. Moving the mouse woke the primary display but the mouse cursor did not move and secondary display on rgb was still sleep. I was able to reach the box with ssh. Everything seemed to work as expected but the display and mouse and keyboard were completely frozen. Any ideas how to avoid this? It is p.i.t.a. to remember to shut down before lunch or even save everything.

F28 dnf upgrade now running very slow

F28 we upgrade weekly - about 3 weeks ago sudo dnf upgrade is running very slow (checking which packages need upgrading) - the actual download and intstallation of packages is normal -

Installation of F28 is failing every time, Hard Lockup on CPU x

Even the installer doesn't work correctly unless I use the compatibility mode. Otherwise it just gets stuck somewhere in the boot-up. When I actually get Fedora to install it just crashes or freezes or whatever on boot-up. I will always get the 'watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu 0' error, then it exits. I suspect it has to do with hardware but I don't even know where to start to debug this. I had Fedora installed on an iMac a few months ago and had no issues, but no nothing is working correctly. My current specs are:

- XMG A507 based on Clevo N850HK1
- Intel i7 7700HQ
- Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti (mobile)
- 16GB DDR4 2400MHz

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

[SOLVED] Cannot get 28 to update

I cannot update Fedora and not sure how to get around the problem it has. When I run the dnf update I get this at the top:

Problem 1: R-core-3.4.4-1.fc28.i686 has inferior architecture
- package python2-rpy-2.8.6-6.fc27.x86_64 requires R-core = 3.4.4, but none of the providers can be installed
- cannot install both R-core-3.5.1-1.fc28.x86_64 and R-core-3.4.4-1.fc28.x86_64….. (goes on with very like stuff)

and at the very end it states this:

Error: Transaction check error:
file /usr/share/texmf from install of texlive-base-7:20170520-41.fc28.x86_64 conflicts with file from package R-core-3.4.4-1.fc28.x86_64

Any ideas as to how I fix this so I can update the system?

Thanks

Fedora 28 add m2.ssd

My pc is slow to boot .... slow main hard drive.

So I've bought and about to install a 120Gb m2.ssd and want to move the boot, home etc. onto it. /boot is in ext4 (1Gb) but fedora is in lvm2 pv format (just 930Gb in size).

I'd like to avoid having to install Fedora from scratch. So many customisations and tweaks to get where I am today.

The existing boot drive is 1Tb so I can't just clone to the m2.ssd (120Gb).

Is there an easy(ish) way to do this?

[SOLVED] Help! Fedora upgrade failed to start. How to abandon upgrade?

I tried to upgrade from 25 to 27. I get the message the upgrade fails to start then my laptop goes into a reboot.

I can get into the recovery boot or get to my files with a live CD.

I am no longer interested in trying to fix the upgrade. I would like to stick to 25. How do I cancel the upgrade and get my system back? Surely there is something pointing at the upgrade that I can delete?

Can I update every two versions with package manager?

Hi, my question is quite simple. I don't want to update every version, but every two versions, draining at maximum the lifetime of one version.

I'm asking if I can update from Fedora 29 to Fedora 31 with the package manager (or any other process from the installed system) instead of formatting again.

Thanks.
