TV tuner control ?

I just got a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 950Q hybrid TV stick. It is reported to work with LINUX (it is detected)

What apps can I use to control this thing (much like windows media center)?
It was said that VLC works but I couldn't see how to get it to work.
