First time posting on these threads, hopefully this is the correct section, if not, I apologize. And if I leave out any information, please state that too. :)
I'm trying to install Fedora 17 on my HP Pavilion DM4 laptop using a USB. I flashed Fedora 17 on it using Live USB creator.
The installation works fine. Everything goes smoothly, until the very end when it is trying to install bootloader. It will pop up a window that says:
There was an error installing the bootloader. The system may not be bootable.
And indeed, when I restart the computer and yank out the flash drive, it says on a black screen:
Missing operating system_
And just flashes the cursor. I've done a LOT of googling on the subject, a lot of looking around these forums too, but honestly I'm not as savvy with Linux as I want to be. I can understand how to open a terminal and do some basic stuff, but that's about it. I have no idea where to go from here, since all the information I find on the subject is too diverse.
Right now I'm on the USB image. I can connect on the internet, and check out Fedora 17 and all its glory. But I don't know how to go into repair mode, or mess with the settings of the actual install on the hard drive. Any advice? Is there any more information I can give to you guys that would help? Also, not sure if this helps, but the USB I'm using is: W95 FAT32 (Bootable).

Okay, so I found out if I click on Modify Partitioning Layout, at the very end it asks me where I want to place my bootloader. It automatically has it set on dev/sda (MBR) but when I say to install it on dev/sda1 (first sector of boot partition) it doesn't give me the error that is the title of this thread. However, it still says MISSING OPERATING SYSTEM_ with a blinking cursor.
Could this error be because I deleted something when I tried to install Fedora 17, and now my computer doesn't know what to do?
EDIT: Hm, can't find any help anywhere. Not sure what's going on. Do I need grub2? Wouldn't it install with the Live CD? Should I try unetbootin? Should I try a KDE ISO? I'm on the booted image USB right now, and it's running great. Just wish I could take out the flash drive, and boot up, lol! What does MISSING OPERATING SYSTEM mean, if I just installed an operating system?
