hard drive names/letters change, confuses mdadm

I'm running a F17 system with 7 hard drives, 4 of them on a PCI SATA controller card. sda is my OS, and sd[b-g] are drives in a software RAID array. according to my dmesg logs, one of the hard drives (sdd) is getting kicked from the array, so i want to pull it and replace it, but i'm having trouble identifying which one.

i shut down the system and remove a SATA cable from one of the 6 raid drives and boot it back up to see if it is the drive letter that is found in my logs; however no matter what drive i remove the cable from the drive removed appears to be sdg (the last drive). When i shutdown and connect the cable and reboot, mdadm wants to rebuild the disk into the array like its a new drive, taking almost 24 hours to rebuild.

so what is causing my system to change the drive letters to fill the first 6 letters and not maintain the drive letters? can i remove a drive and maintain the drive order? can i reconnect them w/o rebuilding the drive in the array?
