Volume resolution on Fedora 17?

I have a keyboard that has volume control with a machine running Fedora 17. When the volume is changed from the keyboard there are only 17 discrete volume options an it does not seem to be linear volume control. The volume that I want is always directly in between two discrete volume options.

Is there a way to increase the resolution of the volume control? I can't be the only person with the problem. I've searched the internet with no avail.
