Getting ATI card to work

I'm completely lost as to how to get my ATI card working since all of the guides I find are outdated or don't work. I have I've followed a few guides and threads here on the forums and nothing works. I have a dual graphics setup in my laptop and both cards are on by default, however, only the intel card ever gets used. I'd like to switch to the ATI card to test out some wine gaming. I believe the first place to start would be to install the ATI drivers. I'd like to stick with the open source drivers, as I hear those have better support for kernel updates wheras the official drivers provide less support but better graphics and speed.

Just as a side note which may be unrelated, I've tried installing the official ATI drivers (both the beta and the newest release) and I always get an FGLRX not installed error. Whenever I try and install FGLRX, yum cannot find any packages that install this.

So for my first question, how are the open source drivers installed? Are they built into the kernel or will I need to install something extra?

Second, where do I start looking to get X to switch from my intel card (which it used by default) to the ati card?
