Dead mice are hard on the wallet.

And so it was this last weekend when my old Logitech M-BZ96C (wired) informed me it was ready to retire by means of skittish scrolling and chattering intermittent switches on both right and left clicks. Not really a new problem. It's been building up over time.

Naturally, the first thing I did was unplug it, flip it over and spin the screws out for exploratory surgery, fully expecting to find matted wads of dirt, cat hair, lint, dust and small parasitic organisms. I did. But ... once those were cleaned out and everything was all spic and span and re-assembled ... the problems persisted.

Ok. Try it on a different mouse pad and a different machine ... Not good. Problems persist.

Enter stage left, (better known as the Sunday paper) a flyer from OfficeMax cajoles with beautiful photos of sleek and colorful Logitech wireless mice. So I dreamed for a moment, sighed wistfully, then re-asserted Skinflint Control and doggedly moused on. Right up until that stuttering left and right click thing managed to trash an entire folder of photos. Not just the "Ooooh" and "ahhh" kind. Some of them were paydirt. <....>

Long story short, I'm now using a spanking new red wireless Logitech M 325. The one with the "web optimized" scroll wheel. It's really a pretty pedestrian little mouse, and for the grand total of ~$12.00, I don't think I've taken any unjustified risks ... except ...

The problem now is ... after using that accurate scroll for four days, everything else just doesn't seem to measure up any more. In particular, my high-dollar portable mouse for the laptop -- a really sweet Logitech V550 Nano Notebook mouse. Up until now, it was the Cadillac of the pointer fleet around here, but now ... the "normal" scroll function on it feels like driving a Ford Pinto over a jeep trail. <..:(..>

I just hate it when stuff like that happens. <..:dis:..>
